Taining Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Park
Taining Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Park is a classic red tourism destination.
The Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Park is located on the southeastern slope of Lufeng Mountain in Shan Town, Taining County.
Taining was one of the Central Soviet Area counties. During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, the First Front Red Army entered and exited Taining three times. Veteran proletarian revolutionaries such as Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, Peng Dehuai, Nie Rongzhen, Luo Ronghuan, Ye Jianying, and Yang Shangkun once directed military operations here. The 1st Red Army Corps, 3rd Red Army Corps, 5th Red Army Corps, 7th Red Army Corps, and the Red Army's Eastern Army campaigned extensively across the Jian (Ning), Li (Chuan), and Taining (Ning) revolutionary base areas, engaging in fierce battles against enemy forces. Famous battles that took place within Taining County included the "County Town Defense Battle," "Dayangzhang Ambush Battle," "Xinqiao Counterattack Battle," and "Jian-Tai Line Ambush Battle," all of which inflicted heavy blows on the Nationalist army.
During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, Taining County carried out a series of vigorous land reforms, developed Party members, established Party organizations, formed the Taining Branch of the Chinese Communist Party, and set up county and district Soviet governments. It also organized local armed forces, peasant associations, labor unions, the Communist Youth League, the Young Pioneers, and the Red Guards among other mass organizations. The broad masses of working people actively participated in the fervent struggle of "overthrowing landlords, burning land deeds, burning bonds, and distributing wealth." Mass organizations such as the Taining Independent Battalion, Red Guards, the Communist Youth League (Young Communist League), the Young Pioneers, the General Labor Union, and the Peasant Association closely cooperated with the Red Army in battle. They carried out land reforms, helped the Red Army raise food and funds, manufacture weapons and ammunition, produce military shoes and uniforms, transport wounded soldiers, do laundry and provide care, move supplies, transmit intelligence, and serve as guides to support frontline operations. At that time, 3,274 outstanding sons and daughters of Taining joined the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. This was no small feat for a small county with a population of only 50,000 to 60,000 at the time. The people of Taining made significant contributions to the revolutionary cause.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, to commemorate the martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives, the Taining County People’s Government built this Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Park on the southeastern slope of Lufeng Mountain in the county town. The memorial park was completed on April 5, 1986, covering an area of 600 square meters. The main structure in the park, the memorial pavilion, occupies 212 square meters. It is a reinforced concrete structure, three-story pavilion-style tower, 21 meters high, 22.5 meters wide, and 7 meters deep. At the top is installed a party emblem of a sickle and hammer. Originally adorned with colorful lights, it shone brightly and spectacularly at night, visible from all over the city. Behind the memorial pavilion stands a memorial stele inscribed with the words “Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs” in Mao Zedong’s calligraphy style. In 2008, walls inscribed with Mao Zedong’s poetry were added on both sides of the steps in front of the memorial pavilion, enriching the cultural significance of the memorial park.
