The Lotus Pond Hill Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Era: Paleolithic Age

The Paleolithic Age Zhangzhou Lotus Pond Hill site is located in the northern suburbs of Zhangzhou. In 1990, archaeologists discovered over 100 small stone tool sites on the surface of Lotus Pond Hill and collected more than 1,400 small stone artifacts. It is believed that these artifacts originated from gravel bands within the red clay deposits. These gravel bands confirm the geological age. In 2005, further excavations were carried out, and more than 3,000 specimens were collected from three cultural layers, with over 300 stone artifacts preliminarily identified. The raw materials used for the stone artifacts were relatively limited, consisting only of vein quartz and crystal. The Lotus Pond Hill site is divided into northern and southern sections, with connected cultural layers. According to the stratigraphic profile, the cultural layers are inclined at a significant angle from the northeast to the southeast. However, due to later natural erosion and human destruction, the top of the northern section and the southern site no longer exist. How to develop and protect the site is an issue that deserves serious attention. In May 2013, it was approved and announced by the State Council as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
