The Lin Yutang Memorial Hall is located in Xiangcheng District, Zhangzhou. It was opened on October 8, 2001, the 105th anniversary of Lin Yutang’s birth. By October 8, 2005, it had welcomed over 70,000 visitors. The hall is nestled within a banana grove on Tiger-shaped Hill where his parents are laid to rest. It spans 7 mu of land, overlooks Lin Yutang’s former residence, and is embraced by the surrounding banana trees. The main structure is a semi-circular two-story building, drawing inspiration from the architectural style of Lin Yutang’s former home in Taipei, reflecting his philosophy of blending Chinese and Western elements. On the front wall of the building is the inscription “Lin Yutang Memorial Hall,” penned by Shen Peng, Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association. In front of the hall stands a 2-meter-tall seated statue of Mr. Lin Yutang, carved from bluestone. The memorial features 81 granite steps, symbolizing the 81 years of Lin Yutang’s life.

The first floor of the Lin Yutang Memorial Hall serves as an activity room, while the second floor houses the exhibition space. The layout is simple yet spacious. The exhibits include over 100 precious photographs of Mr. Lin Yutang, more than 100 different books, and several personal items that he once used.

Lin Yutang (1895–1976), originally named Lin Heluo or Lin Yutang, was a native of Longxi County. He grew up in a Christian pastor’s family. In 1912, he entered St. John’s University in Shanghai for further studies. After graduation, he worked as an English instructor at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

In 1919, Lin Yutang went abroad for studies with funding from his school. Before leaving for the United States, he married Liao Cuifeng from Gulangyu Island, and the couple traveled together to Harvard University in the U.S. He earned a master’s degree in 1921. In the same year, he went to the University of Jena in Germany to specialize in literature. Half a year later, he transferred to the University of Leipzig to study linguistics.
