Zhongshan Bridge and its Pavilion

Zhongshan Bridge and its Pavilion are listed as a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Zhongshan Bridge and its Pavilion are located in Jiuzhai Village, Xiqiao Subdistrict, Xiangcheng District, Zhangzhou City, dating back to 1925.

Introduction: Originally called the "South Bridge," also known as the "Tongjin Bridge," and commonly referred to as the "Old Bridge," it spans the Jiulong River. First built during the Shaoxing era of the Song Dynasty, it initially functioned as a pontoon bridge before being replaced with stone. Between 1925 and 1926, a new bridge and pavilion were constructed using reinforced concrete and named "Zhongshan Bridge." The bridge runs north-south, measuring 467 meters in length and 8.9 meters in width, featuring an architectural style of European neoclassicism. The pavilion stands 9 meters tall with a base diameter of 5 meters, having a hexagonal plan. It is supported by six circular cement columns that hold up a hexagonal pointed roof. In the center of the pavilion is a large hexagonal column, with each of its six sides inlaid with a polished stone tablet. The east and west sides each bear the three large characters "Zhongshan Bridge," while the other four sides are inscribed with the “Record of the Reconstruction of Zhongshan Bridge.”

In 2013, Zhongshan Bridge and its Pavilion were designated as part of the eighth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units by the People's Government of Fujian Province.

Protected area: A 10-meter buffer zone extends outward from all sides of the bridge and pavilion.
