Monument to the Victory of the Central Red Army’s Eastern Route Army in Zhangzhou Led by Mao Zedong

The Monument to the Victory of the Central Red Army’s Eastern Route Army in Zhangzhou Led by Mao Zedong is a classic site of red tourism.

In 1992, on the 60th anniversary of the Eastern Route Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army’s victory in Zhangzhou, with approval from the central government and provincial authorities, the “Monument to the Victory of the Central Red Army’s Eastern Route Army in Zhangzhou Led by Mao Zedong” was erected to the left front of the Chishan Red House. The inscription on the monument was penned by Marshal Nie Rongzhen, former political commissar of the Eastern Route Army. The monument features an innovative design rich in symbolism. Its shape adopts an abstract design — the main body resembles both a red flag and a sharp sword, representing the core of the Red Army. It was designed based on the meaning of Chairman Mao’s poem “Sixteen-Character Quatrain”: “Mountains — / Piercing the blue sky, their edges unbroken. / The firmament would fall / But for their supporting strength.” The main body of the monument is supported by two inverted V-shaped pillars, symbolizing the support of workers and peasants for the Red Army, forming a trinity. The base of the monument consists of three layers of black granite rings, signifying that the Red Army advanced eastward to Zhangzhou after crushing the Nationalists’ three “encirclement campaigns.” The monument stands 19.32 meters tall, representing the year 1932 when the eastern expedition to Zhangzhou took place. There are six steps at the base of the monument, symbolizing the 60th anniversary. At the top of the monument is an image of a golden sickle and hammer, reminding people to always remember that it was the Communist Party of China that led the revolutionary army and people to establish the socialist homeland. Today, the memorial hall and the monument complement each other, attracting a constant stream of visitors.
