Hou Hujiang Memorial Pavilion

The Hou Hujiang Memorial Pavilion is a classic red tourism site and a base for patriotic education.

The Hou Hujiang Memorial Pavilion is located in Zhenda Village, Banli Township, Zhangpu County.

In the early years after liberation, bandit activities were rampant in Zhangpu County. From February to March 1950, while the People's Liberation Army was focusing its efforts on preparing to liberate coastal islands, there was an urgent need for food supplies, and the weakening of Zhangpu’s military forces led to even more frequent bandit activity. The CPC Zhangpu County Working Committee studied and planned the urgent task of transporting the public grain stored by our army in Zhenda Village, Banli Township. They decided to deploy three armed squads to strengthen the escort and organized civilian workers from various districts to assist Banli Township in transporting the grain. On April 26, Hou Hujiang, the district head of District 3, led cadres, armed personnel, and civilian workers to seize the grain under perilous conditions. On April 27, the civilian workers, escorted by most of the personnel from two armed squads, set off carrying the grain. Bandits lying in ambush seized the opportunity to rush toward Zhenda Village. At that time, only 13 people remained to guard the grain transport base, armed with just one rifle and two handguns, while the bandits numbered over 200 and were equipped with two machine guns. The grain transport team’s location was completely surrounded and subjected to fierce attacks. District Head Hou Hujiang faced the danger fearlessly, calmly commanding the defense. To divert the bandits’ main attack, he broke through the encirclement alone and was fatally shot in the intense battle. To commemorate the revolutionary martyr Hou Hujiang, Banli Township built the Hou Hujiang Memorial Pavilion in Zhenda Village in April 1998.

At the very center above the pavilion is inscribed the name “Hujiang Pavilion.” The two pillars on the front of the pavilion are engraved with the couplet: “Achievements recorded in history, noble spirit spanning the ages.” Inside the pavilion stands a stele inscribed with “A Brief Biography of Martyr Hou Hujiang.”

In December 2009, the Hou Hujiang Memorial Pavilion was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit and a patriotic education base by the CPC Zhangzhou Municipal Committee and the Zhangzhou Municipal People’s Government.

Banli Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Zhangpu County. Established as Banli District in 1953, restructured as a commune in 1958, and changed to a township in 1984. Located in the northwestern part of the county, it covers an area of 124 square kilometers with a population of 140,000. The Yanxi–Banli Highway passes through the area.
