A Wanhua classic passed down for a century.
Jia Xiang Wei Canteen is located on Changtai Street in southern Taipei’s Wanhua district. In business for over 50 years, it’s a taste cherished across two generations. Many locals grew up eating their braised pork rice—it’s a flavor that evokes hometown memories.
Even a simple bowl of braised pork reveals the chef’s dedication.
Nowadays, Jia Xiang Wei Canteen is best known for its braised pork rice, paired with a variety of traditional snacks and classic side dishes. Here, you can enjoy a wide range of classic Taiwanese flavors at wallet-friendly prices.
Popular snacks: fried tofu and red braised pork.
The braised pork used in their rice isn’t just any fatty cut—it’s a gelatin-rich part of the pork, blanched, diced, then simmered in broth until it becomes the slightly sticky, classic braised pork you see on the plate.
Even the presentation of the dry noodles is stunning.
Whenever I see fried tofu on a menu, I have to order it. Aside from loving it myself, making tasty fried tofu really takes skill—and the dipping sauce is the real tell. One bite and you know if the chef cares. And I’ve got to say, the fried dishes at Jia Xiang Wei Canteen totally impressed me. The oil is fresh, not overly greasy, and the exterior and interior textures are just right.
