The "Caoling Ancient Trail Miscanthus Flower Season," now in its ninth year, kicked off grandly in November. Taipei County also offers numerous excellent miscanthus viewing spots, such as Taoyuan Valley Grassland in Gongliao; Keelung Mountain and Cup-and-Saucer Hill near Jiufen and Jinguashi along the highway to Shuinshe Cave; Provincial Highway 102 from Ruifang to Shuangxi, along the Caoshan to Jinbeibei route; Wufen Mountain at the boundary of Pingxi and Ruifang; Linshanbi Scenic Area near Baishawan; the Erge Mountain area in Shiding; and for those who prefer not to travel far, nearby options include the Sunshine Sports Park in Xindian, Youth Park in Xinzhuang, the area around Xiwanci Road in Xizhi, and Linkou Plateau.

Taipei County Government suggests that visitors who are not keen on hiking but still want to enjoy the thrill of climbing high and seeing far in a very short time can consider Taoyuan Valley Grassland.

Route: Drive along Highway 2 along the coast, turn onto Provincial Highway 2B before Fulong → continue until you see a sign pointing to Taoyuan Valley before Changtai Street in Gongliao → turn left into the farm road and drive about 10.5 km → after seeing a public toilet and sign, climb the steps → walk about 1 km along the trail to reach Taoyuan Valley Grassland. If you’re taking the train, you can take the North-Link Line to Gongliao Railway Station, then take a taxi to Xiaozhuangjia Mountain Entrance, which is about 11 km from Gongliao Railway Station.

For those looking to add some cultural flavor to their miscanthus viewing, you can hike up Cup-and-Saucer Hill in Jinguashi early in the morning or climb to the top to overlook the view — look east to the Pacific Ocean, south to Banping Mountain and Caoshan, and admire the facing Keelung Mountain. The continuous mountain ranges are breathtaking. After the hike, you can visit the Gold Ecological Park to experience mining scenarios in the mine tunnels. In the evening, you can also have afternoon tea or dinner in Jiufen while enjoying the mountain and sea scenery.

Route: Drive to Highway 102 in Jiufen, about 200 meters past the 5 km milestone. On the right is the Gediao Parking Lot and the road to Shuangxi; go left downhill to Jinguashi. There are two starting points for the Cup-and-Saucer Hill hiking trail: one at Quanjitang, where you follow the signs and trail for about 30 minutes to reach the top and need to return the same way; the other starts from the staircase opposite the Mining Museum, with green guardrails — follow the trail for about 30 minutes to reach the top.

For visitors who enjoy scenic drives, you can choose Provincial Highway 102 from Ruifang to Shuangxi (Ruishuang Highway). Most people only stop in Jiufen, but this road becomes unfamiliar to most tourists afterward. Along the way, you can see Cup-and-Saucer Hill. As you go further up the mountain road, the view opens up. Besides enjoying the vast fields of miscanthus flowers, crossing the mountain ridge gives you a feeling similar to driving on a high-mountain highway. On clear days, you can also see the golden glow of sunlight on the mountain ridges.

Another miscanthus viewing route is to drive from Ruifang along Provincial Highway 106, then turn toward Wufen Mountain Highway. The moment you enter, you’ll be greeted by fields of miscanthus flowers. Those who want to get out and walk can park at the Wufen Mountain Weather Radar Station and then head to the nearby Wufen Mountain hiking trail. This trail is built along the ridgeline, offering spectacular views. Following the trail down, you’ll reach behind the Xinpingxi Coal Mine Museum in Xinliao Village, Pingxi Township. The stone slabs of the trail are wide and easy to walk on, gently ascending. At the end, you’ll find it located at the back of the museum, making it the best choice for a half-day trip. On the way back, you can also view the beautiful mountainous landscape of Pingxi.

Route: Drive along Provincial Highway 106 toward Ruifang. After passing Shiping Elementary School, turn left onto the general road leading to the Taiwan Coal Mine Museum, and continue until you reach the trail entrance. For those taking the train, please get off at Shiping Station on the Pingxi Line, then walk along Provincial Highway 106 toward Ruifang. After crossing the level crossing, turn left toward the Taiwan Coal Mine Museum to reach the trail entrance.

No elaborate planning is needed — just bring your good mood and enjoy this unique golden beauty of autumn.
