Bei Wu Memorial Pavilion

The Bei Wu Memorial Pavilion is a classic red tourism site and a patriotic education base.

The Bei Wu Memorial Pavilion is located in Daolindun Industrial Zone, Changtai County.

On December 25, 1950, a group of about 150 scattered bandits operating along the borders of Anxi, Tong’an, and Changtai, under the leadership of the political bandit Lin Guanlu, set a trap. They deployed four machine guns and took positions on both sides of the mountain pass leading from Bei Wu to Tong’an, deliberately creating the illusion of a bandit threat. On that day, Lindun Township was preparing to hold a mass meeting to promote and implement the autumn tax collection policy. Upon receiving an enemy report that two or three bandits were robbing people, the military and government cadres decided to send a team led by Deputy Squad Leader Qu Mengyi, consisting of two combat groups (six men), equipped with an additional submachine gun, an automatic rifle, and six grenades, to pursue and suppress the bandits. Han Nansong, a 15-year-old communication officer of the county government, volunteered to join the battle, and one soldier from the Armed Squad of the Fourth District and another communication officer also joined the mission. Led by Qu Mengyi, the ten-person team walked along the creek into the Bei Wu Dam area and was ambushed by the bandits. Facing enemy fire dozens of times stronger than theirs, our side fought calmly and bravely retaliated, but ultimately, due to the overwhelming enemy strength, unfavorable terrain, and being outnumbered, they paid a heavy price. In this fierce battle, Deputy Squad Leader Qu Mengyi, soldiers Wang Fengchang, Chi Baoqi, Chen Shichang, communication officer Han Nansong, and soldier Lin Anjin from the Armed Squad of the Fourth District sacrificed their lives heroically. To commemorate the six martyrs who died gallantly in the Bei Wu anti-bandit operation and to educate future generations, Changtai County built the Bei Wu Memorial Pavilion in 1991.

The Bei Wu Memorial Pavilion was completed on June 22, 1991, with a total construction area of 189 square meters. The pavilion is a mock ancient-style building with green glazed tiles, standing 3.8 meters tall. At the center of the pavilion base stands a 1.4-meter-high, 1-meter-wide tombstone engraved with the names of the six martyrs. The memorial monument stands solemnly at the back and top of the pavilion, constructed from 11 pieces of granite. The base of the monument is 0.9 meters wide, the body is 8.6 meters high, and the top is 0.5 meters wide. The eight golden characters “革命烈士永垂不朽” (Revolutionary Martyrs Live Forever) on the monument shine brightly. Behind the monument lies the martyrs’ cemetery, covered with lush green grass, presenting a solemn and respectful atmosphere.

On March 1991, the Bei Wu Memorial Pavilion was designated as a County-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit and Patriotic Education Base by the CPC Changtai County Committee and the People’s Government of Changtai County.
