North Canal

The North Canal is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Tianjin and is also recognized as a National Water Conservancy Scenic Area.

The North Canal, historically known as the "Imperial River," is an important first-class waterway in Tianjin and a key section of the Haihe River’s main course. It plays a vital role in flood control and diverting water from the Luanhe River. In 2001, Tianjin launched a comprehensive management project for the North Canal, with a total investment of 470 million yuan. The project included the construction of four themed parks — Lanshuiyuan, Beiyangyuan, Yuhéyuán, and Entertainment Park — the building of one new rubber dam, three bridges, and 18 docks, as well as the addition of 900,000 square meters of green space. The total area of water surface and greenery along the canal reached 2.1 million square meters. After the comprehensive management, the North Canal now features clear water, lush embankments, smooth flood discharge, an elegant environment, and abundant tourism resources, making it a beautiful scenic belt.

Historically, the North Canal was an important waterway for grain transport leading to Beijing. It originates in Tong County, Beijing, flows through Wuqing County in Tianjin, receives the Longfeng River, joins the Yongding River, and meets the Yongding New River at Qujiadian in Beichen District. It then passes through Guoxinzhuang and Qianlitu into Hongqiao District, skirts the northeastern edge of Hongqiao District, and joins the Ziya River east of Xinhong Bridge. Finally, it converges with the South Canal at the Sanchahe Estuary to flow into the Haihe River. The canal is 186 kilometers long. Within Hongqiao District, the canal stretches approximately 6 kilometers, with a width of 60–70 meters and a maximum flow rate of 100–184 cubic meters per second. Flowing from northwest to southeast, it serves as the boundary river between Beichen District, Hebei District, and Hongqiao District. It runs through areas such as Xianyang North Road, Dingzigū, Xigu, and San Tiao Shi. Along its banks are attractions such as Taohuayuan and Xigu Park. At the Sanchahe Estuary stands the “Monument to the Tianjin Water Diversion Project from the Luanhe River.” Scenic spots along the canal include [incomplete phrase], Shengxian Bridge, Laojie Bridge, Liuli Bridge, Qunli Bridge, Xuefu Bridge, and Gongnong Bridge. The canal basin is bustling, with a long history, and has significantly influenced Tianjin’s development. The area has played a definite role in the city’s historical, cultural, and folk arts traditions. The canal has also served as an important water source for local residents. Due to its relatively high elevation in the region, numerous ancient wells were once dug along its banks, many of which still stand today. During the rainy season, the canal also functions effectively in flood prevention.

Historically, the North Canal was an important waterway for grain transport to Beijing. It made historic and significant contributions to the formation of Tianjin as a city, as well as to the prosperity and development of its agriculture, industry, and urban growth.
