Tianjin was born of water and thrived because of rivers—the canal has been instrumental in the city’s prosperity and wealth. The Canal Nostalgia Exhibition Hall fully explores the city’s profound historical and cultural heritage, showcasing the vibrant and diverse culture of the Tianjin section of the Grand Canal.

Established in October 2011, the Canal Nostalgia Exhibition Hall is located within the teaching building of Beicang Primary School in Beichen District, Tianjin. Since its opening, it has hosted numerous visits and activities from schools and various sectors of society.

Covering a construction area of 300 square meters, the exhibition hall presents the rich content of North Canal culture through a combination of texts, images, and physical exhibits, based on historical facts and materials. It makes full use of spatial modeling art and graphic design to vividly and intuitively display the cultural heritage of the North Canal. The exhibits primarily focus on the Beichen area through which the North Canal flows, highlighting the history of Beichen District, the formation of the North Canal, and the economic, cultural, educational, and artistic development it spurred—especially the emergence of notable historical figures in the fields of culture and education from this culturally rich land.

The entire exhibition area is divided into nine sections, including “Millennial Winds and Rains of the Grand Canal,” “The North Star by the North Canal,” “The Imperial Granary of the Realm—The Majesty of Beicang,” “Founding Education and Childhood Literacy,” and “The Hero Who Climbed High—Yang Liandi,” as well as 31 thematic panels such as “Key Town of Beicang,” “Beicang Primary School: Then and Now,” and “Climbing High and Achieving Heroism.” These comprehensively and systematically introduce the historical changes of the North Canal and showcase the deep cultural foundation of the school. Stepping into the Canal Nostalgia Exhibition Hall is like entering a magnificent historical scroll that strings together fragments of canal culture, revealing the timeless charm of the Grand Canal in its entirety.

With its detailed exhibits and professional guided tours, the Canal Nostalgia Exhibition Hall enhances its accessibility and educational impact. It has become an important platform for new student orientation, traditional cultural education, and student club activities, as well as a key window for the public to learn about canal culture and explore the ancient history of Beichen. It also serves as a significant base for students to study traditional Chinese culture, familiarize themselves with the school’s century-long history, and foster patriotic sentiments. In 2013, it was designated as a Tianjin Patriotic Education Base by the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government.
