Zhang Xugu Residence

Zhang Xugu Residence is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

Zhang Xugu Residence is located at No. 23, Laozi Dian Street, Huaxilou Subdistrict, Qiaocheng District, Bozhou City, Anhui Province.

The residence faces south and is a three-courtyard quadrangle compound built in the late Qing Dynasty. Originally consisting of 34 rooms, it now retains over 20 rooms including the main gate, wing rooms, southern rooms, eastern rooms, the central hall, passageways, and side rooms. It has an ornamental gate and a brick screen wall. The front courtyard features a decorative floral-pendant gate that divides the area into eastern and western sections, housing guest rooms and a reception area. The middle courtyard contains the central hall and three side rooms on each east and west side, serving as living quarters for the family and their relatives. The rear courtyard includes the kitchen, storage rooms, and servants' quarters. The buildings are constructed with brick and wood, featuring flush gable roofs, stacked-beam construction, and clay-tiled roofing. This represents a well-preserved and typical example of traditional late Qing residential architecture in the Bozhou area. With rational layout and refined craftsmanship, it stands as a significant historical structure. Zhang Xugu was a successful late Qing scholar-turned-merchant known for his Confucian values. He invited skilled architects from Kaifeng to build the residence to high standards. The property holds considerable historical value for the study of the history and architectural culture of northern Anhui and surrounding regions. In 2009, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site.

Protective boundary: 10 meters beyond the original perimeter walls of Zhang Xugu Residence in all directions—east, south, west, and north.

Construction control zone: 30 meters beyond the protective boundary in the east, south, and west directions, and extending to Heping Road to the north.
