Niujizhi Site

The Niujizhi Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Anhui Province.

The Niujizhi Site is located in Hangaolou Village, Niujizhen, Jiaocheng District, Bozhou City.

Discovered in the mid-1950s, it covers an area of approximately 14,300 square meters. Part of the upper layer was damaged during the Cultural Revolution. Trial excavations were carried out in the winter of 1961 and the summer of 1975. Based on the collected artifacts, unearthed objects, and pottery fragments, the site is divided into two cultural layers: the lower layer belongs to the Longshan Culture, and the upper layer to the Shang Culture. The Shang Culture is further divided into early, middle, and late periods.

Artifacts unearthed include tripods, dou (food vessels), and jars from the Neolithic Period to the Shang Dynasty, as well as various pottery rims, feet, pottery fragment specimens, and early Shang oracle bones, bone arrowheads, bone shells, and net sinkers. This confirms that the site dates from the Neolithic Period to the Shang Dynasty, with Shang Dynasty cultural remains being predominant. It is of great significance for studying the origin, development, and environment of the Shang people in the Bozhou area. The Niujizhi Shang Culture Site is relatively well-preserved. The oracle bones unearthed were processed from ox scapulae, with drilled holes and burn marks on the back. The bone shells and bone arrowheads are exquisitely crafted. The trial excavation also revealed evidence of domestic poultry breeding. These findings provide physical evidence for studying the origins of the pre-Shang culture and the socio-economic development of the Shang Dynasty.

Protected Area: Centered on the site, extending 75 meters in all four directions.

Construction Control Zone: A 100-meter buffer zone surrounding the protected area.

Niujizhen: Niujizhen is located at the border of Henan and Anhui provinces and is an important agricultural town in the northwest of Qiaocheng District. It is about 20 kilometers from the city center, with a total population of 67,800 and a total area of 96.59 square kilometers, including 86,000 mu of arable land. Originally consisting of 31 administrative villages, these were consolidated into 15 villages in May this year, governing 164 natural villages. Niujizhen was established in March this year through the integration of the former Anliu and Niujizhen towns.
