Gugeng Site

The Gugeng Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The Gugeng Site is located 1.5 kilometers east of Shangpai Town in Feixi County. The site is terraced in shape, covering a total area of approximately 20,000 square meters. In 1983 and 1987, the Anhui Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted excavations on two separate occasions, uncovering a total area of 450 square meters. Based on stratigraphic superposition, the site is divided into three periods: early, middle, and late. Early pottery was mainly sandy red pottery, with a small number of red pottery items coated with a red slip. Utensils mainly included tripods, dou (food containers), pots, jars, zun (wine vessels), zheng (steaming vessels), and cups. The middle period still featured predominantly red pottery, with three-legged and ring-footed vessels being more common, while flat-bottomed vessels were less frequent. Main vessel shapes included tripods, dou, pots, bowls, basins, plates, bird-headed spout jars, and cups. The late period remained dominated by red pottery, but black pottery became noticeably more common. Major vessel forms included tripods, dou, jars, zheng, basins, bowls, and others. Production tools included stone shovels, stone arrowheads, stone knives, and pottery spinning whorls. Additionally, a rectangular house foundation built on flat ground was discovered, with a fire-hardened, smooth, and hard floor. Around it were cylindrical holes arranged in an orderly fashion. In the center of the house was a rectangular pottery stove, with pottery tripods, dou, basins, and stove grates nearby. This represents the first discovery of a relatively complete Neolithic Age site in Anhui Province.

Protected Area: Extending from the east side of Qingnian South Road to the west side of Gugeng Pond, the area spans 330 meters from north to south and 120 meters from east to west; extending from the north side of Tanchonghe Road to the south side of Gugeng Pond, the area spans 360 meters from east to west and 150–80 meters from north to south.

Construction Control Zone: Extending from the west side of Qingnian South Road to Tanchonghe Road, the area spans 330 meters from north to south and 120 meters from east to west; extending from the south side of Tanchonghe Road to the southern bank of the Tanchong River, the area spans 360 meters from east to west and 350–200 meters from north to south.

Shangpai Town: Shangpai Town is the seat of Feixi County government and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the county. It is 17 kilometers from downtown Hefei, the provincial capital, only 7 kilometers from the Hefei High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and 12 kilometers from Hefei Luogang Airport. Hefei-Anqing Highway, Hefei-Tongling Highway, and the Hefei-Jiujiang Railway all pass through the town. Passenger boats from Paizi River Wharf can reach Chaohu Lake and even the Yangtze River. The town enjoys very convenient water and land transportation with connections in all directions. Shangpai Town currently administers 20 village committees and 10 neighborhood committees, covering a total area of 66.93 square kilometers, including an urban built-up area of 10 square kilometers and cultivated land area of 26,450 mu.
