Tunxi Old Street
Tunxi Old Street emerged alongside the development of Huizhou merchants. As early as the 1920s and 1930s, it already had the “atmosphere of major commercial ports like Shanghai and Hangzhou,” enjoying great prosperity. The street stretches 1.5 kilometers in length and is 7 meters wide. The shops along the street are generally not large, but extend deep inside, forming unique layouts such as “shop in front, workshop at the back,” “shop in front, warehouse at the back,” and “shop in front, residence at the back,” which further highlight the “old-world charm” of the street. The ancient culture of Huizhou displays its enchanting allure on this street, making it an artistic corridor of outstanding traditional national culture.
There are dozens of time-honored shops on the street, among which “Tongderen” is a traditional Chinese medicine store established in the second year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty, boasting a long history. The world-renowned “Qimen Black Tea” and “Tunxi Green Tea” are mostly distributed and traded in Tunxi; “Huizhou Ink” and “She Inkstones” are also abundantly available, while products of the “Four Carvings of Huizhou” (brick, wood, stone, and bamboo), Huizhou-style traditional Chinese paintings, woodblock prints, steles, epigraphy, potted plants, and root carvings are seen everywhere.
The charm of the old street has captivated the film and television industry. To date, over a hundred film and TV works have been shot here, earning it the industry nickname “a living Along the River During the Qingming Festival.”
Anhui Huangshan City
The Wancuilou Building is located on Tunxi Old Street at the foot of Mount Huangshan. This historic old street retains the architectural style of the Song Dynasty and attracts numerous domestic and international tourists with its distinctive Huizhou-style buildings. In the midst of this bustling old street stands the Wancuilou, a 24-meter-tall, four-story structure covering an area of more than 500 square meters. With its carved beams and painted rafters, upturned eaves, and integration of wood, brick, and stone carvings, it combines antique materials with new construction in a uniquely ingenious design.
The Tunxi Museum is located at No. 168 Tunxi Old Street, with a construction area of about 700 square meters. The museum displays Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, ancient calligraphy and paintings, ceramics, jade artifacts, bronze ware, stationery, and Huizhou brick carvings. It has hosted special exhibitions such as the “Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Mao Zedong’s Birth” and the “Tunxi District Integrity Culture Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition.”
The Dai Zhen Memorial Hall is situated on Longfu Middle Street. It is a Qing Dynasty residential building known as the “Yaobi Tower.” The memorial covers an area of 100 square meters and includes a tribute hall, a library tower, and a reading room. The tribute hall houses a statue of Dai Zhen, with a plaque inscribed with “Supreme Master” by Duanmu hanging in the center. Glass display cabinets in the hall showcase precious cultural relics such as manuscripts of Dai Zhen’s works and imperial edicts from Emperor Qianlong. On both sides of the tribute hall are library rooms that store the “Complete Library of the Four Treasuries,” which Dai Zhen helped compile, as well as various editions of his works and tens of thousands of volumes of classics, histories, philosophical writings, and literary collections. The lounge is furnished with simple and elegant Qing Dynasty furniture, and features illustrations depicting Dai Zhen’s life, vividly portraying his unyielding journey of seeking truth with the ethos of “pursuing knowledge not to cater to the trends of the time, but to uncover genuine wisdom for future generations.”
The Former Site of the CPC Southern Anhui Committee is located at No. 69 Tunxi Old Street, Tunxi District, Huangshan City, Anhui Province. It is a two-story brick-and-wood building facing the street, constructed in the late Qing Dynasty, covering an area of 177.87 square meters, and now houses a revolutionary history exhibition hall. The Former Site of the CPC Southern Anhui Special Committee served as the headquarters for the Party’s leadership in the revolutionary struggle of the Southern Anhui region during the Agrarian Revolutionary War period. It is the only well-preserved revolutionary memorial site in the central urban area of Huangshan. In the winter of 1933, Fang Zhimin dispatched Li Jiesan, Secretary-General of the Trade Union of the Northeastern Jiangxi Soviet, to Tunxi to carry out Party activities and establish the CPC Southern Anhui Special Committee. It subsequently initiated and led five influential peasant revolutionary uprisings, including the establishment of the first Soviet government in Southern Anhui after the Kecun Uprising.
