Tongderen Pharmacy

Tongderen Pharmacy is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Tongderen Pharmacy is located in Tunxi District, Huangshan City, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

As a time-honored traditional Chinese medicine shop in Huizhou, it was founded in the second year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1863), with a history of 140 years. Initially, it was co-established by Cheng Dezong from Shangxikou and Shao Yuanshen from Longfu, with only five or six employees. The business mainly focused on the wholesale of Chinese herbal medicines and also offered medical services on-site. The name “Tongderen” (同德仁) not only incorporates the names of the two founders but also conveys the meaning of “working together with one heart and one mind, conducting business with benevolence and righteousness.” The pharmacy initially thrived, but later suffered due to conflicts between the owners, poor management, and improper staffing. As a result, it incurred losses twice and struggled to sustain operations. In the 15th year of the Guangxu reign (1889), after negotiations and restructuring among shareholders, Cheng Xieqing, the accountant, was appointed as the manager (managerial director), which led to the revival of the pharmacy.

In 2012, Tongderen Pharmacy was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Anhui Province.

Protected area: 3 meters east of the building foundation, 5 meters outside the south courtyard wall, 1 meter west, and 5 meters north.

Construction control zone: 7 meters east, 5 meters south, 9 meters west, and 5 meters north beyond the protected area.
