Tunxi Shijia Courtyard

The Tunxi Shijia Courtyard is a cultural relic protection unit of Huangshan City.

The Tunxi Shijia Courtyard is located in Liyang Town, Tunxi District, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

It is said that the Shi family from Wangchuan, Jixi, are descendants of Shi Shouxin, a founding hero of the Northern Song Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, the Shi family relocated here, became prosperous through the medicine trade on Xizhen Street in Liyang, and founded the “Shiyi Herbal Medicine Shop.” The Jiangyou Jia family operated a porcelain shop on Xizhen Street, and both families built grand mansions along the old Liyang Street.

The residence built by the Shi family is what is now known as the Shijia Courtyard complex, at address No. 12.

According to the “Huizhou Architecture” section of the Huizhou Culture Series: “The original Shijia Courtyard only had the central front hall and rear chamber.” Later, “an additional wing was added on the east side, and another on the right side.” The entire Shijia Courtyard is divided into three main courtyards: east, central, and west. The Shi family patriarch lived in the central front hall and rear chamber area, while the eldest and second sons lived in the western and eastern secondary courtyards, respectively, with further organic expansions added over time.

In 2008, the Shijia Courtyard was designated as part of the third batch of municipal-level cultural relic protection units in Huangshan City.

Liyang Town: Liyang was established as Liyang County in 207 AD, and during the Jin Dynasty, the name was changed from Liyang to Liyang. Located at the confluence of two rivers and at the crossroads of three provinces, it has been a commercial hub on the border of Anhui, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi, as well as an important port town along the Xin’an River for thousands of years. It is often said, “Ming-Qing Tunxi, Tang-Song Liyang.”

In the spring of 1992, Liyang Town was formed by merging Liyang Township, Longfu Township, and Jianzhong Township. It currently administers 8 villages, 5 communities, and has a total population of 31,389. The town covers a total area of 22.89 square kilometers.
