Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory

The Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory is a cultural heritage conservation unit in Tunxi.

The Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory is located at No. 5 Houlu Mountain Road, Tunxi, dating back to 1956.

The Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory is a century-old establishment. It includes more than ten production procedures such as mold carving, lampblack collection, ink making, ink drying, polishing, and gold tracing, along with a fully equipped physical and chemical testing center for ink sticks. The factory gathers all the technical equipment and ancestral formulas of master ink makers. It also preserves 7,800 varieties of precious ink molds created and carved by famous artisans from the Ming and Qing dynasties onwards, and continues to maintain the essence of traditional craftsmanship — the ancient method of hand-collecting lampblack.

In November 2019, the “List of Representative Project Protection Units for National Intangible Cultural Heritage” was announced, and the Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory was designated as the protection unit for the “Huizhou Ink Making Technique.”

The Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory has been designated as a county-level cultural heritage conservation unit.
