Luhu Scenic Area

Luhu is a reservoir located within Guangde County. Situated on the foothills of the Tianmu Mountain range, it lies to the east of the bamboo-lined Gancigou Valley and to the west of the towering Jizhaoshan Mountain. Like a sparkling jewel, Luhu is nestled in an endless sea of green. The Luhu area (including onshore facilities) covers 5 square kilometers, with the lake itself spanning over 3,000 acres. Here, winding waters meet overlapping peaks—water meanders through the mountains, and peaks emerge from the water. The dam, standing over 30 meters high and stretching more than 1,000 meters long, is majestic and imposing, resembling a dragon lying across the landscape with overwhelming presence. During his time in Guangde, the Song Dynasty statesman Fan Zhongyan composed a poem titled "Shixi Waterfall," which was inscribed on a stone tablet. It reads: “Far unlike ordinary streams, it springs from heights all alone. Does its descent remain so straight? Will it stay pure when reaching the ocean? Its force rivals dragons’ rage, while winds bring hail and rain profound. When dusk descends, clouds blend as one, and verses naturally form a painting.”

Painted Screen Mountain is a scenic spot within Luhu, located in the center of the lake. To the east lies the Canglong Peninsula, and to the west it faces the distant Xiaolingshan Mountain. The mountain is surrounded by water on all sides, making it an island in the lake. Pines and cypresses cover its slopes, their verdant hues vibrant, while colorful mountain flowers catch the eye. A memorial pavilion dedicated to Zhang Bo, a legendary figure known for his water control efforts, has been built here. Legend has it that Zhang Bo once attempted to divert water from Lucun through the Shengdu Canal to the Wuliang River, in order to dredge Nan Yi Lake and connect it to the Yangtze River. However, due to the enormity of the project and his limited resources, he was unable to complete it. Nonetheless, his spirit of water management is widely celebrated in Guangde, Langxi, and even Gaochun in Jiangsu Province, where he is deeply respected by the people. Along the cliffs by the water at Painted Screen Mountain, there is a circular mountain-side stele corridor engraved with poems by renowned scholars from various dynasties who visited the mountain, as well as modern master painters' poetic tributes to the landscapes of Luhu.

By the lakeside pavilion lies the “Puyang Fishing Platform,” the former fishing spot of Puyang Mo, a noted scholar from Guangde during the Ming Dynasty. The platform features a pavilion named “Fish-Calling Pavilion.” Legend says that Puyang Mo used to fish here and would invite others to join him in poetry recitals and harmonious gatherings in the pavilion, creating a cherished tale. A visit to Luhu is not complete without seeing the bamboo sea. The bamboo forests of Gancigou and Jishan form the unique highlight of the Luhu Scenic Area. Layer upon layer of peaks, deep valleys, and undulating waves of green bamboo captivate every visitor, transporting them into a magical world of green. The “Three Peaks of Verdant Beauty” on Jishan is one of Guangde’s historic and iconic landscapes. Luhu’s bamboo sea and the mountain landscape complement each other with distinct charm. Here, winding waters meet overlapping peaks—water meanders through the mountains, and peaks emerge from the water. A visit to Luhu is not complete without seeing the bamboo sea. The bamboo forests of Gancigou and Jishan form the unique highlight of the Luhu Scenic Area.
