Ancient Houses in Daliu Village

The ancient houses in Daliu Village are designated as a cultural heritage site under the protection of Guangde City.

Daliu Village in Sihexiang, Guangde County, is located on a terrace near the foot of Laolong Mountain, forming an ancient mountain settlement. A stream flows eastward past the village from the south, flanked by lush trees and swaying bamboo. A cluster of grey-tiled, blue-brick houses crisscrosses in an orderly fashion, creating a scene so picturesque it feels like stepping into a painting—showcasing the seamless integration of ancient southern village architecture with the natural environment. The Liu family residence at the heart of the village stands out with its uniquely charming architectural style, earning widespread admiration. Built during the Chongzhen era (1628–1644) of the Ming Dynasty, the original structure was a two-courtyard brick-and-timber building, but it was destroyed during the Xianfeng era (1851–1862) of the Qing Dynasty. The surviving main house features three bays in width. The entire building and courtyard are enclosed by tall walls, with a flat, high front wall and an irregular, staggered side elevation. The walls are coated with lime plaster, topped with butterfly tiles. The entrance gate is framed with bluestone and adorned with a polished blue-brick gate hood, presenting a harmonious and dignified color scheme. The polished blue-brick screen wall features delicate mortar joints and crisp lines. From a higher vantage point, the village view evokes the poetic imagery of “green trees hugging the village edge, with green hills slanting beyond the ramparts.” In June 1983, it was listed as a county-level key cultural heritage protection site.
