Deng Shiru's Study Room

Deng Shiru's Study Room is a municipal cultural relics protection unit in Anqing.

Deng Shiru's Study Room is located in the rear section of No. 53 Guanyin Street, Anqing City, Anhui Province, and is part of the complex of buildings that make up Tianhua Nunnery (also known as Dou Shen Nunnery). Deng Shiru, a renowned calligrapher and seal carver of the Qing Dynasty, was a native of Huaining. During his lifetime, he was very close to Abbot Wuben of Tianhua Nunnery, who specially set aside this room for Deng to study and practice his calligraphy. The stone plaque inscribed with “Deng Shiru’s Study Room” by Li Zhaoluo has been lost. It is also known as the Former Residence of Wanshan Mountain Man. The study room faces south, is built with brick and wood, stands 5.7 meters tall, has a depth of 9.8 meters, and features a total width of four bays (three main rooms and one auxiliary room), spanning 13.8 meters, covering an area of approximately 200 square meters. The front porch is 1.8 meters deep, featuring a two-step beam structure. In front of the porch is a courtyard and patio, adjacent to the hillside at the former site of Daguan Pavilion, with stone walls built along the mountain. In 1984, Qi Gong, then Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, was invited to inscribe a plaque for the study room.
