Former Site of Bai Wenwei's Tobacco Burning

The Former Site of Bai Wenwei's Tobacco Burning is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.

The "Tobacco Burning Pavilion" is located at the intersection of Yanjiang West Road and Gou'er 0- in Anqing. It was built in 1987 by the Anqing Municipal Government to commemorate General Bai Wenwei. After the Xinhai Revolution, eighteen provinces declared independence. In May 1912, the then 34-year-old Bai Wenwei served as the Governor and Civil Affairs Chief of Anhui Province under the Republic of China. Upon taking office, he noticed that opium smoking was rampant among the citizens of Anqing, so he issued an order to ban opium and shut down opium dens. In mid-September, a dishonest merchant attempted to smuggle opium worth 1.6 million yuan on the British-owned Taikoo Steamship Company's ship "Dingchang," planning to unload it at Anqing Port and distribute it elsewhere. The smuggling attempt was intercepted by the water police at Da'nanmen. Upon receiving the report, Bai Wenwei immediately ordered the confiscation of all the opium. The next day, a British gunboat aimed its cannons at the southern gate of Anqing City in a show of force. Bai Wenwei ignored the threat and subsequently ordered all the confiscated opium to be publicly burned in front of the Governor’s Office. On October 23, Sun Yat-sen arrived in Anqing aboard the ship "Lianjing" and gave a speech, highly praising Bai Wenwei’s action of burning the opium, calling it "the most conscientious effort in the anti-opium campaign. The way your Governor burned the opium the other day was handled quite properly... Your province's approach to banning opium can indeed serve as a model for other provinces."

Longshan Road Subdistrict: The Longshan Road Subdistrict Office is located in the central area of the ancient city of Anqing, and is named after the famous Longshan Road.
