Tomb of Song Yutian

The Tomb of Song Yutian is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.

In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), on the 19th day of the eighth month in the year of Renzi, Song Yutian passed away in Anqing at the age of 66. His descendants and clan members gave him an elaborate burial, and his tomb was located behind the Dragon King Temple on Niushan (Ox-shaped Mountain) at Wulidun, five li north of Anqing city (now the ancestral mountain of the Song family in Wucun Village, Shili Township, Anqing). Originally, two ginkgo trees were planted in front of the tomb. Over the years, they grew tall and lush with luxuriant foliage, standing upright and proud. The uniquely elegant appearance of the trees symbolized the upright character and integrity of the man who rested beneath them. Today, the ginkgo trees are no longer there (they were felled during the 1958 national campaign to produce steel), but the tomb site and its ornamental columns remain, with an inscription on the stele reading “Tomb of Song Yutian, the Late Qing Dynasty’s Imperially Honored Middle-Grade Official.” In 2017, the Anqing Municipal People’s Government designated this tomb as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit.
