Tomb of Chen Zhu

The Tomb of Chen Zhu is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The Tomb of Chen Zhu is located on the north side of Xiaqingliang Temple in Shifeng Village, Zhongming Township, Tongling City, 25 kilometers from the city center. It is a key cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The tomb is built with square-hewn stones, with a mound 2 meters high and 4.5 meters in diameter. In front of the tomb stands a stone stele inscribed with “Tomb of Chen Zhu, a Sage of the Song Dynasty.” The tomb has undergone multiple restorations and is well preserved.

Protected area: 10 meters east, 50 meters south, 20 meters west, and 20 meters north of the tomb mound.

Construction control zone: 20 meters east, 20 meters south, 10 meters west, and 20 meters north outside the protected area.

　Chen Zhu (982–1061): A native of Tongling during the Northern Song Dynasty, courtesy name Zixiang, he was a forestry expert of the Northern Song. He devoted himself to studying the Qimin Yaoshu (Essential Techniques for the Welfare of the People), determined to change the traditional concept of single-crop agriculture. Through bold experimentation, he planted all his mountain land with paulownia trees, managed them carefully, summarized experience, and wrote the first and only surviving ancient monograph on paulownia cultivation in China and the world—Tong Pu (Paulownia Manual). The book, about 16,000 characters long, is a self-contained and distinctive treatise in the field of谱录学 (specialized record literature). He is an outstanding ancient Chinese expert on paulownia.
