The Exhibition Hall of Chairman Mao's Inspection Tour of Xiaoying Hongxiang is a classic red tourism destination.

The Exhibition Hall of Chairman Mao's Inspection Tour of Xiaoying Hongxiang is located at No. 56, Xiaoying Lane, Shangcheng District, Hangzhou, with a construction area of approximately 200 square meters. It is adjacent to Xiaoying Park and enjoys convenient transportation. Since its opening, the exhibition hall has hosted over 10,000 groups of domestic and international guests, attracting more than 300,000 visitors. Distinguished figures and dignitaries such as the renowned American journalist Anna Louise Strong, Boston Mayor Kevin White, and Gifu City Mayor Masao Makita have led delegations to visit. Chinese leaders including Luo Ruiqing, then Minister of Public Security, Cui Naifu, then Minister of Civil Affairs, and others have also inspected the site.

On January 5, 1958, while en route to Hangzhou Airport, Chairman Mao Zedong made an impromptu decision to inspect sanitation conditions in Xiaoying Lane. He visited three residences at Nos. 61, 56, and 42, examining residents' bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, food cupboards, and water containers, and praised, "Your sanitation work is well done!" In 1972, to commemorate this historic event and further promote the Patriotic Health Campaign, the residence at No. 56, where Chairman Mao had inspected, was turned into the “Exhibition Hall of Chairman Mao’s Inspection of Sanitation Work in Xiaoying Lane.” Subsequently, the site was designated as a “Patriotic Education Base” by the Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government.

In 2001, the Xiaoying Subdistrict invested 800,000 yuan to demolish and rebuild the original structure according to its original design, naming it the “Exhibition Hall of Chairman Mao's Inspection Tour of Xiaoying Hongxiang.” The nameplate was inscribed by Wang Guoping, former Standing Committee Member of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee. The main hall prominently displays a large photo of Chairman Mao walking through Xiaoying Lane, while the left wall features his inscription: “Mobilize the people, stress hygiene, reduce disease, and improve health.” The left wing showcases 11 photos of Chairman Mao with local residents, along with exhibits such as the rattan chair he sat on, the Hangzhou Daily newspaper he read, and items he used, including notebooks, pens, and ink bottles. The right wing displays photographic materials reflecting over 40 years of sanitation work and public health education in Xiaoying Lane. It vividly illustrates the tremendous changes that have taken place in Xiaoying Lane under the care of the Party, and authentically records the pioneering and striving spirit of generations of its residents. This is a place visited by Chairman Mao—Hangzhou’s red landmark and the cradle of revolution in Zhejiang.

Chairman Mao’s inspection tour of Xiaoying Hongxiang helped bring the “Xiaoying Hongxiang” brand to national and global recognition. Later, Xiaoying Hongxiang was recognized four times as a National Model Sanitary Unit—in 1959, 1960, 1981, and 1990. Reform and opening-up ushered in a new chapter for Xiaoying Lane. The area has seen economic growth, social stability, cultural prosperity, and residents living prosperous and peaceful lives.
