Fang Hui Chun Tang

Fang Hui Chun Tang is a protected cultural heritage site of Hangzhou.

The time-honored Chinese brand “Fang Hui Chun Tang” is located on Hangzhou’s famous historic Hefang Street. Established in the sixth year of the Shunzhi reign (1649 AD), it was founded by Mr. Fang Qingyi from Qiantang. Mr. Fang, whose courtesy name was “Zai Chun” (meaning “Rejuvenate Again”), chose the name “Fang Hui Chun Tang” (literally “Fang’s Return to Spring Hall”) as a symbol of “turning misfortune into fortune, and bringing about miraculous recoveries.” Coming from a family with a long tradition in traditional Chinese medicine, Fang Qingyi had an in-depth knowledge of pharmacology and excelled in pediatrics. His family-secret formula for “Children’s Rejuvenation Pills” gained great renown in Hangzhou. Backed by strong resources, Fang Hui Chun Tang was one of the six major pharmacies (including Hu Qing Yu Tang, Wan Cheng Zhi Tang, Ye Zhong De Tang, Zhang Tong Tai Tang, Tai Shan Tang, and Fang Hui Chun Tang) that dominated Hangzhou’s medicinal herb market during the late Qing Dynasty.

Fang Hui Chun Tang covers a construction area of over 2,500 square meters, with an overall layout typical of traditional Ming and Qing dynasty architecture in the Jiangnan region.

Characterized by traditional features, the complex mainly consists of three parts: the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hall, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, and the Ginseng Shop. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic is an officially designated medical institution at both the provincial and municipal levels in Zhejiang Province. It has over twenty consultation rooms, along with antique furniture and old-style consultation spaces that exude the mystique of traditional Chinese medicine, subtly reflecting the profound richness of this ancient practice. Here, various specialized departments of TCM are represented, and more than 70 nationally and provincially renowned TCM experts, professors, and chief physicians — all highly skilled practitioners — provide consultations, serving the public with dedication.

Fang Hui Chun Tang’s Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic and Medicine Hall have not only been recognized as provincial and municipal medical insurance providers and accredited under the national GSP standards, but were also awarded by the Hangzhou Municipal Committee as the city’s only “Hangzhou Characteristic Pharmacy.” Its signature medicated wines, herbal cuisines, and traditional formulations have earned high praise from both locals and tourists. The annual “Fang Hui Chun Tang TCM Herbal Paste Festival” and “Fang Hui Chun Tang Ginseng and Antler Festival” are well-known across Hangzhou. Free health newsletters titled “Wish You Health” and daily complimentary health-promoting teas further win public acclaim. With its long history in traditional Chinese medicine, classic Ming and Qing–style Jiangnan architecture, and enduring vitality, Fang Hui Chun Tang remains a treasured institution today. Its genuine practices and deep-rooted traditions not only enjoy widespread fame in Hangzhou and beyond, but also embody the profound essence of TCM culture — promoting the unique and exquisite medical techniques and wellness philosophies of Chinese medicine. Upholding tradition and benefiting the present, Fang Hui Chun Tang continues to write beautiful new chapters in the modern era, earning the recognition and praise of many. Mr. Ren serves as the honorary director of the Xinglin Club in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic; the clinic also proudly honors the legacy of the four renowned physicians of modern Hangzhou — Ye Xichun, Shi Peitang, Wei …, whose stories are widely known and passed down.

Protected area: approximately 3 meters to the east and north of the heritage structure itself, 3–10 meters to the south, and 0–15 meters to the west, covering a total area of 2,245 square meters.

Construction control zone: extends to the western edge of Zhongshan Middle Road (connecting with the construction control zone of the Modern Architecture Complex at Four Corners) to the east, the construction control zone of Qiantang First Well to the south, approximately 30 meters beyond the protected area to the west, and approximately 20 meters beyond the protected area to the north, covering a total area of 4,642 square meters.
