Ming and Qing Dynasty Stone Tablets
The Ming and Qing Dynasty Stone Tablets are a cultural tourism attraction.
On the left side of the entrance path to Weiyuan City, there are nine stone tablets erected, four from the Ming Dynasty and five from the Qing Dynasty. The tablets range in height from 2 to 2.4 meters and in width from 1 to 1.2 meters. The four Ming Dynasty tablets are: the "海天清晏" ("Sea and Sky Tranquil") Tablet, the "撑半壁天" ("Supporting Half the Sky") Tablet, the "擎天鳌柱" ("Sky-Supporting Ao Pillar") Tablet, and the "天开图画" ("Heaven-Opened Painting") Tablet. The five Qing Dynasty tablets are: the "重修招宝山宝陀寺" ("Reconstruction of Baotuo Temple on Zhaobao Mountain") Tablet, the "海天雄镇" ("Sea and Sky Mighty Fortress") Tablet, the "招宝山宝陀寺续修碑记" ("Continuation Inscription for the Reconstruction of Baotuo Temple on Zhaobao Mountain"), the "永清四海" ("Eternal Peace Across the Seas") Tablet, and the "镇海防夷图记" ("Record of Coastal Defenses Against Foreign Invaders") Tablet.
The Ming and Qing Dynasty Stone Tablets are named after the stone tablets erected during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the second year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1622), imperial envoy and governor Sū Màoxiāng erected the "Sea and Sky Tranquil" Tablet. In the fifth year of the Tianqi era (1625), Zhejiang regional commander Shān Yīn Hé Bīnchén erected the "Supporting Half the Sky" Tablet. In the seventh year of the Tianqi era (1627), imperial envoy and Zhejiang regional commander Guō Qīn of Yinghai erected the "Sky-Supporting Ao Pillar" Tablet. During the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty, regional commander Dù Hóngyù of Yufeng in charge of both Zhejiang regions erected the "Heaven-Opened Painting" Tablet. The "Reconstruction of Baotuo Temple on Zhaobao Mountain" Tablet was erected in July of the ninth year of the Shunzhi era (1652) of the Qing Dynasty. In the fifteenth year of the Daoguang era (1835), Ningbo–Shaoxing regional administrator Zhōu Yàn erected the "Sea and Sky Mighty Fortress" Tablet. In the nineteenth year of the Daoguang era (1839), local resident Chén Xiūdǐng composed and Shū Dá inscribed the "Continuation Inscription for the Reconstruction of Baotuo Temple on Zhaobao Mountain." The "Eternal Peace Across the Seas" Tablet was erected by Zhejiang military commander Ōuyáng Lìjiàn in the tenth year of the Guangxu era (1884). The "Record of the Battle of Zhenhai Estuary During the Sino-French War" Tablet was erected in March of the fifteenth year of the Guangxu era (1889) by Zhejiang military commander Ōuyáng Lìjiàn. It was listed as one of the provincial-level key cultural relics protection units in 1989. Located within Weiyuan City on Zhaobao Mountain, the site currently preserves nine stone tablets standing along the city wall, including four from the Ming Dynasty and five from the Qing Dynasty, making it one of the scenic area’s attractions.
