2017 Jinhae Naval Port Festival: A Feast of Fireworks and Cherry Blossoms

South Korea’s most iconic cherry blossom festival, the “Jinhae Naval Port Festival,” is held annually for about ten days around early April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The main events take place in the Jinhae district of Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. The Jinhae Naval Port Festival also serves to commemorate Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a national hero of Korea. Before 1945, Jinhae was a Japanese naval base, and is now a key military site for the South Korean Navy. The cherry trees were planted during the Japanese occupation, were once cut down, but were later replanted to become what they are today.

Not far from Busan, Jinhae is famous for its dreamy scenery of cherry blossoms lining the banks of the Yosu Stream, as well as the classic view of trains passing by Gyeonghwa Station. At night, special lighting and decorations add to the charm. Each year, the festival attracts over 2 million visitors from both Korea and abroad. Strolling through the tunnel formed by rows of cherry blossom trees, you can also enjoy the falling petals. The festival also features exciting performances such as military band parades and fireworks displays—absolutely not to be missed.
