Ningbo Bang Museum

The Ningbo Bang is a group of people who uphold tradition while pioneering innovation. The cultural and geographical characteristics of Ningbo also combine a profound historical heritage with an open maritime spirit. Therefore, the architectural design of the Ningbo Bang Museum fully adheres to this important philosophy. If we look at the Ningbo Bang Museum from above, we can be amazed to find that its main building complex forms a large “甬” (Yong) character. Yong is the abbreviation for Ningbo.

The museum’s main gate is located on the east side, symbolizing “auspicious air arriving from the east.” The gateway features a steel structure and a stilt-style design. At the end of the axis where the gate is situated, there is a traditional opera stage. To the north of the axis lies the Guild Hall, which serves as the main activity venue for Ningbo natives both at home and abroad. To the south is a complete exhibition area, where the courtyard architecture interlocks vertically and horizontally like wedges, embodying the spirit of unity among the Ningbo Bang. The museum is surrounded by water systems, all converging at the wide expanse of water in front of the opera stage, symbolizing the “confluence of three rivers.”

The first floor of the Ningbo Bang Museum’s main exhibition hall is divided into three sections: “Prelude,” “Pioneering Endeavors,” and “Devotion and Passion.” Visitors can learn about the inseparable bonds the Ningbo Bang formed with century-defining figures such as Sun Yat-sen, Mao Zedong, and others during key periods of development; understand the entire history of the Ningbo Bang from its beginnings in the Tang and Song dynasties, continuation through the Ming and Qing dynasties, transformation in the Republic of China, and integration in the contemporary era; and appreciate how Ningbo Bang members always closely linked their own futures with the fate of the nation, dedicating themselves with heartfelt devotion. The second floor is divided into three sections: “Achievements,” “Shared Roots,” and “Conclusion.” “Achievements” is the highlight here, featuring six thematic zones — “Shipping,” “Finance,” “Trade,” “Industry,” “Education,” and “A Galaxy of Talents” — that respectively narrate the outstanding contributions made by the Ningbo Bang in these fields.

The first theme is “Shipping.” Ningbo has had an inseparable bond with the ocean since ancient times, and its very bloodline naturally embodies the trait of “navigating turbulent waves as if traversing a thoroughfare.” It is no coincidence that two of the world’s seven greatest shipping tycoons were from Ningbo. From Yu Qiaqing and Gu Zongrui to C.Y. Tung and Y.K. Pao; from sand boats, Sanbei Shipping, and Taichangxiang to the Tung Group and Global Shipping, the Ningbo Bang have written brilliant chapters in the maritime history of both China and the world.

The second theme is “Finance.” The Ningbo Bang occupy an important page in the modern financial history of China. The country’s first commercial bank, first stock exchange, and first insurance company were all initiated, founded, invested in, and managed by Ningbo natives. They were bold in reform, pioneered transformation, and introduced modern new financial models to China, thereby significantly advancing the modernization of China’s financial industry.

The third theme is “Trade.” Ningbo merchants, represented by the Ningbo Bang, have always been a source of pride for the people of Ningbo. From Suzhou’s Sun Chunyang Southern Goods Store and Beijing’s Tongrentang to Tianjin’s Daren Hall; from Old Shunji, Lao Fengxiang, and Fang Jiuxia to Rongchangxiang Woolen Suits and Xiedaxiang Silk and Cloth Stores, the many century-old shops and numerous famous brands created a string of commercial miracles in modern Chinese history by the Ningbo Bang.

The fourth theme is “Industry.” Throughout the history of modern Chinese industry, the Ningbo Bang have repeatedly achieved “firsts”: Ye Chengzhong founded China’s first match factory, “Xiechang Match Company”; Zhang Yiyun founded China’s first monosodium glutamate enterprise, “Tianchu MSG Factory”; Fang Yexian founded China’s first cosmetics company, “China Chemical Industry Society”... In the modern era, the Ningbo Bang seized the opportunities of post-war global economic development and quickly became a highly notable and active group on the world economic stage. It was the endeavors of Ningbo-born entrepreneurs that built the globally renowned Ningbo Bang.

The fifth theme is “Education.” The Ningbo Bang deeply understand that education is the foundation of a nation. They were among the first groups of merchants to realize that revitalizing education and commerce could strengthen the nation and its people. Among them are Bao Yugang, founder of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China; Wang Kuancheng, who dedicated his life to cultivating high-tech talent in China; Sir Run Run Shaw, the first major Chinese philanthropist in education; Chen Tinghua, the first donor to China’s Hope Project; Cao Guangbiao, whose legacy of supporting education has been passed down through generations; and Zhao Anzhong, who contributed tirelessly to educational philanthropy... The Ningbo Bang have erected historical monuments to the advancement of science and education for national prosperity.

The sixth theme is “A Galaxy of Talents,” also known as the “Ningbo Bang Beyond Business and Industry Zone.” The Ningbo Bang are world-renowned for their exceptional business acumen and also lead the trends of the times with their rich humanistic spirit. In various fields and industries, Ningbo natives have carried forward traditions and led their domains. From the erudite “Five Horses of Peking University” to the well-known 96 academicians, from numerous political figures to cultural and artistic celebrities, the frequent appearance of the name “Ningbo” shows that the Ningbo Bang are not merely an outstanding business community but have become a collective calling card for Ningbo.
