Site of the Pan Pond
The Pan Pond site is a cultural tourism attraction.
The Pan Pond is located within Zhenhai Middle School in Zhaobao Mountain Subdistrict, Zhenhai District. Originally built in the eighth year of the Shaoxing era during the Southern Song Dynasty (1138), it has undergone multiple renovations over the dynasties. Covering an area of 145 square meters, it is crescent-shaped, stretching 26 meters from east to west and 6 meters from north to south, with three stone bridges spanning it. The pond is surrounded by stone railings and paved with stone at the base. It was originally part of the Confucius Temple. The Confucius Temple originally consisted of the Dacheng Hall, Dacheng Gate, Pan Pond, Minglun Hall, Xingtan (Apricot Altar), and Yan Pond. The Pan Pond was originally the inner moat of the ancient imperial college (Confucian temple), first dredged in the eighth year of the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1138), with three bridges rebuilt on it in the fourth year of the Jiading era (1211). During the Opium War, Yu Qian, the Imperial Commissioner overseeing military affairs in Zhejiang and Viceroy of Liangjiang, committed suicide by jumping into the pond here to fulfill his pre-war vow to live or die with the city.
This site has a long history and has witnessed major battles such as the Sino-French War, holding significant historical, artistic, and scientific research value.
