Xiepu Moon Gate

Xiepu Moon Gate is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhenhai District.

Xiepu Moon Gate is located about 150 meters east of Xiepu Town Street, at the southern foot of Fenghuang Mountain in Xiepu Town.

The moon gate stands at the site of the former Xiepu market entrance, originally serving as the Xiepu sluice tunnel, and was built around the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Oriented east-west, the Xiepu waterway gradually silted up after the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, leading to the abandonment of the sluice.

Today, the wall is 10 meters long, the gate is 3.9 meters high, and 5.4 meters deep. There are low wing walls on both sides. The arch is built with vertically bonded, segmented, and parallel masonry. The gate is inscribed with a plaque and couplets. The eastern plaque reads “The Sea Calm Never Rises,” while the western one says “Waves Return to Nurture Beauty.” Above it stands the Shawan Pond stele, dating back to the seventh year of the Guangxu reign (1881), documenting the historical changes of Shawan Pond.

It was designated as a district-level cultural relic protection unit in December 2000.
