Ningbo Xu Residence

The Ningbo Xu Residence is a cultural relics protection unit of Zhenhai District.

The Xu Residence was built in the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928). It currently serves as the office site for the Zhenhai District Committee. Located within Zhaobaoshan Subdistrict, it borders to the east the Wu Jie Former Residence, part of the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit—Zhenhai Port Coastal Defense Ruins; to the south, Chenghe Road; to the west, Zhenhai Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital; and to the north, the Zhenhai District People’s Congress Hall and the District Cultural Center. Covering a land area of 1,200 square meters with a building area of 1,039 square meters, the main structure is a three-bay, two-lane building combining wooden and steel-concrete construction. The roof features a flat ridge covered with flat tiles, with two gable walls extending beyond the ridge line, characteristic of a hanging gable roof style. The exterior walls are coated with concrete and feature large horizontal lines, while the window lintels project outward with water spouts, giving it a somewhat Western architectural appearance. The eaves woodwork and second-floor sunroom are constructed with steel-concrete, and the three-dimensional columns lend a sense of solemnity. The flooring is laid with patterned tiles, enclosed by iron railings with decorative patterns, and equipped with full-length glass sliding windows, all contributing to a Western aesthetic. The interior is floored with tongue-and-groove wooden planks, the ceiling is adorned with molded plaster designs, and the rooms are fitted with fireplaces and flush toilets—some of the most modern residential facilities in Zhenhai at the time.

In front of the main building lies a flower terrace, once known as the Xu Family Garden, covering an area of about 150 square meters, exquisitely arranged with precious plants such as cycads and red maples.

The original southern-facing main gate bore the plaque “Frost Red Cottage.” It was demolished and closed in 1985 during the widening and extension of Shengli Road.

In December 2000, it was designated as a district-level cultural relics protection unit.

Zhaobaoshan Subdistrict: Zhaobaoshan Subdistrict is located on the eastern coastal area of Zhenhai District, on the northern bank of the Yong River estuary. It stretches from Waiyou Mountain in the east, along the Yong River in the south, facing across the river the Ningbo Economic and Technological Development Zone and Xiaogang Town of Beilun District, bordering Jiaochuan Subdistrict, and reaching the Grey Tortoise Sea in the north, where it meets Jintang Township of Zhoushan City at Qiliyu. Surrounded by water on the southeast and north sides, it covers a total area of 20.8 square kilometers, governs 10 communities, and has a population of 62,300.
