Memorial Hall of Martyr Chen Shouchang

The Memorial Hall of Martyr Chen Shouchang is a classic red tourism destination.

The Chen Shouchang Memorial Hall is situated in the picturesque Shouchang Park in Zhenhai District. Covering an area of over 5,500 square meters with a building area of nearly 1,000 square meters, the site features a bronze statue of Martyr Chen Shouchang in the center. The base of the statue bears an inscription by Marshal Nie Rongzhen that reads: “Eternal Glory to Martyr Chen Shouchang.” The surrounding classical-style buildings house the Chen Shouchang Memorial Hall and the Zhenhai Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall. This is a patriotic education base in Zhenhai District and also one of the first municipal-level CPC history education bases in the city.

Martyr Chen Shouchang was born into a poor but scholarly family on Zhao Baoshan Street in Zhenhai District. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1924 and remained committed to the Party’s cause throughout his life. He served as an Executive Committee member of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, a member of the Special Committee of the CPC Central Committee, Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee, Secretary of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Provincial Committee and Political Commissar of the Provincial Military District, as well as a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Republic and Political Commissar of the 16th Red Army Division. In November 1934, he died heroically while commanding troops in battle in Hubei at the age of just 28. He held the highest position among revolutionary martyrs from Zhenhai.

In early 1992, the Zhenhai County Party Committee and County Government decided to rename the then-under-construction Gutang Park to Shouchang Park and to build the Chen Shouchang Memorial Hall within it. Local people from all walks of life responded enthusiastically, making donations that totaled 2.0826 million yuan. Construction began on March 5 of the same year and the hall was completed and opened to the public on November 11. It includes interlinked facilities such as the Chen Shouchang Memorial Hall, the martyr’s bronze statue, a square, Shouchang Pavilion, and the Zhenhai Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall. The Chen Shouchang Memorial Hall houses 254 precious items including photographs and belongings of the martyr. The Zhenhai Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall displays the deeds of 67 revolutionary martyrs, featuring 192 precious photos and 209 informational panels.
