Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving Ruins Park
Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving Ruins Park is a cultural tourism attraction.
Guide: Located in the mountain hollows by Dongqian Lake, this is a representative site of Southern Song Dynasty tomb pathway stone sculptures. Its discovery fills a significant historical gap of the Southern Song period, and it has been designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
In ancient times, tomb pathway stone carvings were known as “stone statues of ceremonial figures.” These were arranged according to the tomb owner’s status and in line with contemporary regulations. Preliminary surveys indicate there are over 30 sites with more than 180 pieces of such stone carvings distributed across areas such as Shangshui, Xiashui, Hanling, Hengjie, and Fuquanshan. These include civil officials (symbolizing loyalty), military officers (symbolizing bravery), crouching tigers (symbolizing integrity), standing horses (symbolizing righteousness), and kneeling sheep (symbolizing filial piety)—all displayed in pairs along both sides of the tomb pathways. Some sites also feature stone pillar tomb markers, stone grandmaster chairs, and wood-like stone memorial archways. Among these stone sculptures, the largest civil and military figures stand up to 3.5 meters tall, with precise craftsmanship and vivid expressions—some solemn, others fiercely angry—remarkably lifelike. Details such as official hats, tassels, winged ear protectors, square collars, robes, and armor are all intricately and delicately carved. The animal carvings display diverse postures and movements, adorned with various decorative patterns. This rich and intact collection of historical relics fully showcases the extraordinary artistic creativity of Southern Song stone carving. The Southern Song tomb pathway stone carvings of Dongqian Lake hold high historical, academic, and artistic value. Transportation: Accessible via K906 bus from Ningbo South Station.
