Zhou Yao Insect Museum

The Zhou Yao Insect Museum was established in 1996 by the people of his hometown to honor the noble spirit of patriotism and love for science demonstrated by Professor Zhou Yao, a renowned entomologist from Yinxian County, China, and to inspire people—especially the younger generation—to strive diligently and contribute actively to their country. It is currently the largest insect museum in Asia named after an individual. The museum presents its exhibits in Chinese, English, and Esperanto, showcasing outstanding achievements in China’s biological research from an individual perspective. The entire museum covers an area of over 8,000 square meters, with a building area of more than 1,500 square meters.

The museum has four exhibition halls in total:

The first hall displays the advanced deeds of Professor Zhou Yao in patriotism and devotion to science;

The second hall showcases the achievements of Professor Zhou Yao;

The third hall features over 3,000 labeled insect specimens;

The fourth hall displays over 1,000 butterfly specimens.

The museum’s video hall can accommodate nearly 100 visitors. You can watch the documentary “Entomologist Zhou Yao” to gain insight into the life and charisma of this master of entomology, or view insect science educational videos that take you into the mysterious world of insects.

Since its establishment, the museum has welcomed over 50,000 visitors from home and abroad, including people from China, the UK, the US, France, Portugal, Singapore, Japan, and more. It has been featured in special broadcasts on CCTV programs such as “Oriental Son” and “Man and Nature,” and received extensive coverage in major newspapers like People’s Daily and Zhejiang Daily. It has had a particularly strong impact on young people. The Zhou Yao Insect Museum fully fulfills its roles in ideological education, science popularization, and tourism, highlighting the characteristics of a natural museum themed around the “insect world.” It was the first to fill the gap of a natural history museum in Ningbo. A visit typically takes about 75 minutes, and the museum can accommodate approximately 100 visitors at a time.
