Water Tower

The water tower is a cultural heritage site protected at the district level in Yinzhou District.

The water tower is located at No. 348 Xinhé Road, Jiangdong District, Ningbo. According to the water plant manager, it was built in 1956 as part of the water purification facilities for the Jiangdong Water Plant under the Ningbo Water Supply Company. It was one of the taller buildings at the time and was once used as an aviation beacon. The Ningbo Water Supply Plant was first planned in March 1955, and by August 1956, it was completed and powered up, forming the initial framework of Ningbo’s water supply system after the liberation. The water tower stands approximately 18.5 meters tall and is a cylindrical concrete structure. Its upper part is a cylinder with a diameter of 7 meters and a height of about 4 meters, capable of holding 250 tons of water. The lower part is a cylinder with a diameter of 5 meters and a height of about 14 meters, featuring a door for access. Inside are three iron pipes of varying sizes serving as inlet and outlet connections. The upper and lower parts are connected by a funnel-shaped structure about 0.5 meters high. On the western exterior side of the tower is an iron ladder leading to the top, which is surrounded by an iron railing. The water tower is now out of use, though the lower section is inhabited. As the first water tower built in Ningbo after the liberation, it is a significant symbolic structure in the history of the city's water supply development. In 2010, it was designated as one of the first batch of district-level cultural heritage protection sites by the Jiangdong District People’s Government.
