Twin Rainbows Over the Lake

In the 28th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1848), to dredge the silt at the bottom of the lake, a long dike was built from Shaojia Mountain in Meihu to Yangjia Mountain, named Wulitang. It is about 8 meters wide, with a stone arch bridge constructed at each end — the eastern one called Lower Rainbow Bridge (Xia Hong Qiao) and the western one Upper Rainbow Bridge (Shang Hong Qiao), both built to allow boat passage. In late spring and early summer, after thunderstorms, when the sun breaks through the clouds, rainbows hang above while the arched bridges lie below, with the landscape reflecting off the water to create a spectacular scene. After Meihu Lake was converted into farmland in 1961, this scenic view disappeared.

Location

Dongqian Lake, Yinzhou District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province

Dongqianhu Town: Nestled within the undulating, picturesque mountains on the southeastern outskirts of Ningbo City, Dongqianhu Town enjoys a prime location and convenient transportation. It lies in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, a region characterized by rapid economic development, dense population, and an extensive transport network, serving as a central hub in the eastern Zhejiang tourism network. The town is just a 10-minute drive from downtown Ningbo and Yinzhoubao Airport, and only 10 minutes away from entry points to the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway and the Tong San Expressway. With the completion of the Hangzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge in 2008, Ningbo entered a two-hour traffic circle centered around Shanghai. Within the town lies Dongqian Lake, praised by Mr. Guo Moruo as having “the charm of West Lake and the grandeur of Taihu Lake…” More information about Dongqianhu Town++
