Former Residence of Fang Xianzhi

The former residence of Fang Xianzhi is located at No. 109 Munan Road, Heping District, as it stands today. Built in 1942, it is a two-story Western-style building with a brick-and-wood structure. The red roof stands out like a dot of decoration, particularly eye-catching. The exterior features white cement finish adorned with irregular stripes, giving it a simple and bright look. The courtyard is neat and shaded by green trees. This residence is currently used as office space by a department of the Tianjin Finance Bureau and is listed as an immovable cultural relic in Tianjin that has not yet been officially designated as a protected cultural heritage site.

Fang Xianzhi (1906–1968), a renowned orthopedic expert and medical educator, dedicated his life to China’s orthopedic healthcare and was known as the “Sage of Orthopedics.”

Fang Xianzhi was born on February 24, 1906, in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province. In 1925, he attended the pre-medical program at Shanghai Hujiang University, and in 1928, he entered Peking Union Medical College. After graduating in 1933, he stayed on campus due to his outstanding academic performance and worked there for nine years as a resident physician, chief resident, teaching assistant, lecturer, and associate professor. He also went to the United States for advanced studies in orthopedics.
