Former Residence of Sha Menghai
The former residence of Sha Menghai is a provincial-level cultural heritage site in Zhejiang Province.
The former residence of Sha Menghai is situated in Shacun Village, Tangxi Town, Yinzhou District. It is an old-style two-courtyard, four-bay brick-and-wood structure building. It is a provincial-level cultural heritage site. Sha Menghai (1900–1992), originally named Wenruo, also known as Menghai, with the courtesy names Shihuang, Shacun, and Jueming, served as a professor in the Chinese Department at Zhejiang University and the Calligraphy Section of the Traditional Chinese Painting Department at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the director of the Xiling Seal Art Society and the vice chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association. He witnessed firsthand the development of modern calligraphy since the Republican era and, with seventy years of dedication to the art, was revered as a master of contemporary calligraphy. Before the age of fifty, his calligraphy encompassed a wide range of styles including seal, clerical, regular, running, and cursive scripts, but he became especially proficient in running and cursive scripts in his later years. His calligraphy is vigorous and powerful, majestic and profound, with a bold and robust style that is uniquely his own, reaching the pinnacle of artistic refinement.
Shacun Village: Shacun is located 2 kilometers west of the Tangxi Town government seat. To the east it neighbors Shicun, to the south it borders Wangjiashan Village in Song’ao Town, Fenghua City, to the west it connects with Tongcun, and to the north it adjoins Qianxitou Village. The village committee is based in Shacun. Covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers, Shacun has a total of 720 households and a population of 1,550. It includes three natural villages and residential areas: Shacun, Shacun Xincun, and Shacun Xiaoqu. The village currently has 571 acres of arable land and 2,503 acres of forested land.
