Wang De (1517–1558), courtesy name Ruxiu, art name Donghua, was a native of Yongchang Fort. In the 17th year of the Jiajing reign (1538), he passed the imperial examination and was appointed as a judicial officer in Dongchang Prefecture. In the 29th year (1550), he was appointed as an assistant surveillance commissioner in Guangdong, but later returned home due to illness. In the 31st year (1552), he gathered a volunteer army of a thousand troops with his uncle Wang Pei to prepare for resisting the Wokou pirates. In the 37th year (1558), in April, the Wokou launched a major raid on Wenzhou. On the sixth day, Wang Pei was killed by the pirates in Meitou, Ruian. The next day, Wang De engaged in fierce battle with the pirates, killing several of them. On the 20th, when the prefectural city was in urgent need of relief, Wang De led his troops to the rescue but was ambushed and killed in battle at Jin’ao, Longwan. He was posthumously awarded the title of Vice Minister of the Court of Imperial Stables, and the Minzhong Shrine was built on Kangle Street in his memory. Wang Mingshi (1579–?), courtesy name Shike, art name Yiyu, was known for his exceptional martial arts skills. He achieved the top rank in both the martial provincial and metropolitan examinations, and became the martial arts Zhuangyuan (top imperial scholar) in the 25th year of the Wanli reign (1597). A “Three Yuan Archway” was erected in downtown Wenzhou in his honor. He served as a commander of the Imperial Bodyguard and was granted the title of Mingwei General.
