Former Site of the Liberation of Dayue Command Post

In early May 1949, according to orders from the CPC Zhejiang Southern Regional Committee and the Headquarters of the Zhejiang Southern Guerrilla Column, the CPC Qing-Jing-Li Guerrilla Unit was incorporated into the Zhejiang Southern Guerrilla Column and dispatched to the Wenzhou front to begin preparations for the liberation of Wenzhou. On May 6, Zhu Daxiao, Secretary of the Party Committee of Danan County, received an order from the CPC Zhejiang Southern Regional Committee and the Headquarters of the Zhejiang Southern Guerrilla Column: to fully mobilize the militia and local populace to pin down the Kuomintang forces in Wencheng County, thereby facilitating the liberation of Wenzhou. Zhu Daxiao immediately consulted with Wu Gaotan, a member of the Standing Committee of the County Party Committee, and other leaders, and issued urgent notices to all district Party committees to initiate a general mobilization across the county. Each district Party committee was instructed to organize militias to surround Dayue Town, the last stronghold of the Kuomintang. At the same time, the Liberation of Dayue Command Post was established. Initially stationed in Chisha, the command post later moved to Yangjing, which overlooked the county seat from a higher elevation.

That night, tens of thousands of militiamen from across the county gathered from all directions and encircled Dayue Town, the county seat. Starting in the latter half of the night on May 6, the militiamen launched fierce attacks on the town using homemade guns and cannons. The First and Third Battalions of the Fourth Regiment of the Zhejiang Security Forces, unwilling to accept defeat, launched a mortar attack on the Yangjing Command Post early the next morning. However, they were met with strong resistance from over 30,000 militiamen, cadres, and civilians, forcing them to eventually retreat.

After the Fourth Regiment of the Zhejiang Security Forces and the Wencheng County Self-Defense Force abandoned the city and fled, militiamen from various routes successively entered the city. The Guard Unit of the Central County Party Committee and militiamen from Tai’bei District also arrived in Dayue Town. Upon entering the city, the Liberation of Dayue Command Post immediately issued a proclamation to reassure the public, cleared the battlefield, and took over the offices and archives of the county and district governments of the Kuomintang. With this, the last Kuomintang stronghold in Wencheng was declared liberated.

The Former Site of the Liberation of Dayue Command Post is located in Yangjing, Dayue Town, Wencheng County, covering an area of 95 square meters. It is a two-story building consisting of five rooms. The rightmost room is constructed of bricks, the leftmost of earthen walls, and the three central rooms are made of wood. The house is situated at a higher elevation, overlooking the county seat, less than 4 kilometers away, and enjoys relatively convenient transportation.
