Howling Mountain is one of the filming locations for the TV drama "The Myth" and also served as an important base where King Goujian of Yue plotted his revenge and restoration of the kingdom. Three generations of Lu You’s ancestors once lived here. Though Howling Mountain is actually quite small and not very high, the best time to visit is from April to May when peach blossoms are in full bloom. The mountain’s rock formations are also worth seeing — the Cloud Stone and Chessboard Stone at the summit stand opposite each other, reaching toward the sky. The Cloud Stone resembles a beautiful mushroom cloud, while the Chessboard Stone is said to be the spot where immortals played chess. Just beware of aggressive mosquitoes during summer hikes.

The Howling Mountain Scenic Area is located in Gaobu Town, about 12 kilometers east of downtown Shaoxing. It was one of the important bases where King Goujian of Yue plotted his revenge and restoration of the kingdom 2,400 years ago. The area contains ancient Yue celadon kiln sites from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods; the ancestors of the patriotic Song Dynasty poet Lu You built houses and temples here and lived here for three generations. The scenic area boasts nearly 60 attractions of various sizes, all exquisitely crafted by nature. The most famous rock formations include the Cloud Stone, Chessboard Stone, Elephant Trunk Sucking Water, and One Cave Heaven, among more than 20 others — serene yet dynamic, gentle yet perilous. The thousand-year-old Shouning Zen Temple, located on the mountaintop in the Fire-Wood area, is serene and mystical. From the Liberation Pond, take a traditional Shaoxing boat (wu peng boat), disembark, and climb the steps to reach the “View All Pavilion,” where you can gaze into the distance at a pastoral Jiangnan water town scene of small bridges, flowing streams, and quaint homes — a view that makes you forget the city and feel a deep sense of returning to simplicity. The Yansuo Cave, known as a “land of idyllic beauty,” is especially captivating.

Howling Mountain is picturesque all year round and is also a typical botanical ecological garden: in spring, peach blossoms cover the mountains; in summer, it is shaded by layers of green; in autumn, golden ginkgoes and vibrant red maples shine; in winter, pines and bamboos remain lush and green, creating a unique microclimate and natural environment.

Howling Mountain hosts numerous festivals throughout the year: the Peach Blossom Festival runs from March 28 to April 20, the Release Life Activity Tour from May 1 to May 31, the Peach Viewing and Tasting Tour from June 1 to July 31, the Barbecue Festival from October 1 to October 31, and the Chrysanthemum Appreciation and Tangerine Tasting Tour from November 1 to December 15. The scenic area has a quasi-three-star hotel, Yindu Hotel, making it a great destination for sightseeing and leisure all year round.
