Cangqiao Straight Street
Cangqiao Straight Street is located within the Yuezicheng Historical Block, on the eastern side of Mount Fu. It is a historic-cultural street characterized by ancient city features, traditional residences as its main essence, and integrating residential, commercial, and tourism functions. Cangqiao Straight Street has also been awarded the “UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation,” which describes this old street as a “living showcase of China’s heritage.” The old street mainly consists of three parts: canals, residences, and stone-paved roads. The central canal in the old street, Huanhe River, is an important historical relic of Yuezicheng, situated along the central axis of the street. It stretches 2.2 kilometers from Shengli West Road in the north to Lu Xun West Road in the south. From north to south, it is successively spanned by traditional stone bridges including Cang Bridge, Longmen Bridge, Baozhu Bridge, Fu Bridge, Shimen Bridge, Jiuwu Bridge, Xiguan Bridge, and Huangyi Bridge, adding to the ambiance of a water town. The canal is lined mainly with riverside residences, most of which were built in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period. Among them are 43 various types of traditional gateways, collectively reflecting the traditional architectural features and local customs of Shaoxing. The street is lined with many traditional shops and restaurants. To help visitors better understand the local customs and culture of Shaoxing, local institutions have also set up venues such as the Yue Arts Museum, Huangjiu (Yellow Wine) Museum, Drama Museum, and Calligraphy and Painting Museum along the street.
