Zhuge Xianshan Scenic Area
Zhuge Xianshan Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.
Zhuge Xianshan is located in Fusheng Town, Yuecheng District, Shaoxing City. Legend has it that this was the dwelling place of Ge Hong, a renowned Taoist, physician, and naturalist of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, as well as his granduncle Ge Xuan. To this day, relics such as the Immortal Ge’s Elixir Well and the Dragon Pool for Rain Prayer remain on the mountain, from which Zhuge Xianshan gets its name.
The "Yue Jue Shu" records: “The Fuzhong Great Pond was constructed by King Goujian of Yue as an allotment field for public benefit, making the land fertile.” Over 2,500 years ago, an initiative by the ancestors left an eternal mark of “prosperity” on this land.
As an important branch of the Kuaiji Mountain Range, the majestic Zhuge Xianshan was both a participant in and witness to ancient Yue civilization. In ancient times, the natural environment of Shaoxing was divided into two areas, separated by the Pingshui area of the Kuaiji Mountains. One was south of the mountain, an area inhabited by ancient communities, and the other was north of the mountain, a swamp region often inundated by rising seawater that reached up to Pingshui. Located in southeastern coastal China, Shaoxing was home to the ancient Yue people and the center of Yue civilization. At that time, Zhuge Xianshan, the highest peak in Fusheng, was an “island”—a crucial lifeline for the survival of the ancient Yue inhabitants.
Near Zhuge Xianshan lies a small hill called Pingchao Mountain. At the foot of its western slope is the provincial-level key cultural relic protection site, the Warring States Kiln Site. Later, the tides here gradually receded, and people gradually migrated to the area. A small piece of land that emerged from the ocean became a hill, named Pingchao Mountain because it once lay level with the sea.
Around Pingchao Mountain are many place and mountain names that reflect the ancient landscape. One kilometer southwest of Pingchao Mountain is a hill called Shachengtou, entirely made up of fine sand, indicating that it was once part of the seashore where waves and tides deposited yellow sand over centuries, forming a sand hill. On the western edge of Pingchao Mountain is a place called Shangluobutou, said to have been a wharf where goods were loaded and unloaded for sea voyages. “Shachengtou” and “Shangluobutou” show how Zhuge Xianshan protected the local people and witnessed the long-standing cultural history of Fusheng.
Scenic Highlights
Surrounded by bamboo groves and winding stone paths; at the summit, mist shrouds the peaks, adding a mysterious allure. A tranquil body of water is embraced by the mountains. Its blue hue is pure and profound. A local saying goes: “Though Xianglu Peak is high, it cannot match the waist of Zhuge Mountain.” As the third highest peak in Shaoxing County, it stands 572 meters above sea level. Compared to grand mountains and famous rivers, Zhuge Xianshan is a refined masterpiece of nature.
“Mountains rise in five peaks, with green mist ascending between them.” In Fusheng, its beauty is captured in the four characters “Ge Peak Misty Haze,” and along with Six Mausoleums’ Pine Winds, it is listed among the "Ten Scenic Spots of Fusheng." Meandering mountain paths, deep valleys, drifting clouds, and verdant hills create a fairyland-like scene. Among them, Wufeng Ridge and Longchi Hill boast breathtaking landscapes and have long captivated visitors.
Among the peaks, Zhuge Qifeng is particularly famous. This scenic wonder is recorded in the "Kangxi-era Kuaiji County Annals": “The mountain rises thousands of ren high, extends fifty li around, and has waterfalls hundreds of zhang tall that crash down onto stone mortars like thunder. At its base are the dwellings of the Taoist Zhuge, along with Elixir Wells, Immortal Rocks shaped like carvings, and an Eagle Beak Rock dozens of zhang high, where eagles nest and prey such as foxes and rabbits are dropped for people to collect. To its right is a Dragon Pool used for praying for rain.”
