Shaoxing Ying'en Gate (Xiguo Gate)
Ying'en Gate, also known as Xiguo Gate, is located at the western entrance of the ancient city of Shaoxing and served as the main land and water route from Hangzhou to Shaoxing in history. Over this 51-hectare area, a thousand-year-old canal flows gently, telling stories of a distant past. In the 1920s, the gate tower and other structures of Ying'en Gate were demolished to make way for road construction. In 2000, the municipal government rebuilt Ying'en Gate at its original site. It is now a free attraction that offers visitors a glimpse into the profound historical essence of the ancient city of Shaoxing. From the top of the gate tower, you can see the beautifully developed landscape to the east of Ying'en Gate, while the area to the west of Ying'en Bridge is currently undergoing demolition. It’s believed to be part of a grand urban plan by the municipal government, and everyone is looking forward to even more beautiful scenery unfolding in the future.
Ying'en Gate is located at the northwest corner of downtown Shaoxing. In ancient times, all imperial officials and even the emperor had to pass through this gate, hence the name "Ying'en," which means "welcoming grace." It was historically the main land and water route from Hangzhou to Shaoxing.
