Guyan Tingkou
Guyan Tingkou is located in the bustling downtown area of Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Heading down from Yuewang Terrace and crossing Hengfu Street, you’ll arrive at a T-junction — this is Guyan Tingkou.
On one side, not very conspicuous, stands the Martyr Qiu Jin Monument, erected in 1930, inscribed with the epitaph “In Memory of Martyr Qiu Jin” written by Mr. Cai Yuanpei.
Guyan Tingkou in Shaoxing holds an important place in modern Chinese history. It was here that Qiu Jin, a renowned martyr of China’s democratic revolution, was executed. In 1907, on the eve of the Xinhai Revolution, Qiu Jin was arrested at Datong School. In the courtroom of the Shanyin County Magistrate, she displayed great courage and unyielding resolve. Using the brush and ink given to her to write her confession, she swiftly penned the famous line: “Autumn wind, autumn rain — they chill one to the bone.” Soon after, Qiu Jin was executed bravely at Guyan Tingkou.
