Shaoxing Xianglu Peak
Xianglu Peak is located outside Jishan Gate in Shaoxing City. There are three routes to the summit from the south of Dayu Mausoleum, and the peak stands at an elevation of 354 meters. Starting from Luosixuan on the north side of the peak, passing through Nanzhen Hall and climbing 1,508 steps through several pavilions such as Qingcui Pavilion, you can reach the top. The summit is several dozen meters wide and shaped like an incense burner. The Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi once wrote the line “The steep peak resembles a Buddhist incense burner.” In rainy or cloudy weather, the mountaintop is shrouded in mist and smoke, earning it the name “Fragrant Peak Misty Rain,” which is one of the Twelve Scenic Spots of Yue Region. Hence, Wang Shipeng, the top scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty, also penned the famous line “The incense burner naturally wreathed in smoke.”
The scenery around Xianglu Peak is spectacular. Along the ridge, there are unique rocks and peaks such as Half Moon Rock, One Piece Stone, Cloud Gate Stone, and Flying Rock. On the eastern side, there is Big Rat Tower, topped with a huge boulder. According to ancient texts, there is Arhat Pool below the peak and Thousand-Zhang Pit beside it. Xianglu Peak once had a temple built against the rock, named Nantianzhu, which has now been rebuilt. Additionally, the Three Saints Hall and Guanyin Treasure Hall have been newly constructed on the mountain. On the ridgeline stone walls, there are seven modern inscriptions, among which the longest cliff carving is the “Heart Sutra.”
