Millennium Torreya Forest of Kuaiji Mountain

The Millennium Torreya Forest of Kuaiji Mountain is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The "Millennium Torreya Forest of Kuaiji Mountain" scenic area is located in the southern mountainous region of Shaoxing County, 35 kilometers from downtown Shaoxing. Situated in Zhanao Village, Jidong Town — known as the "Hometown of Torreya in China" — it is characterized by its thousand-year-old torreya trees and evergreen ecological forests. The area combines leisure tourism, vacationing, and fruit-picking activities like hiking, rock climbing, and tree climbing into one fantastic ecotourism destination. It is also known as a "natural oxygen bar."

Within the "Millennium Torreya Forest of Kuaiji Mountain," there are ancient torreya trees with uniquely striking appearances and high ornamental value. Some have twisted roots, some hollow trunks, and others broken branches, creating a beautiful landscape. Examples include "Loving Couple," "Brothers United," "Three Generations," "Wild Boar’s Den," "Eagle Spreading Wings," "Twin Dragons Building a Bridge," "Rejoicing Group Dance," "Shaolin Martial Arts," "One-Finger Handstand," "Spiraling Upward," and "Sentinel Standing Tall" — all resembling vivid animal or human shapes. Upon closer inspection, these torreya trees resemble exquisite natural bonsai, offering endless visual delight and inspiring imagination. Walking deep into the vast torreya forest and bathing in the fragrance of torreya is an intoxicating experience. There is also the "King of Chinese Torreya," over a thousand years old, yielding more than a thousand kilograms of green torreya fruits annually and generating an income exceeding ten thousand yuan. The oldest among them, the largest "Torreya King," is over 1,400 years old. A local scholar once described the torreya of Jidong as follows: “On lofty mountain peaks, green still thrives. Through a thousand years of frost and snow, its color remains bright. With pride unmatched, it rivals the green pine — tough branches and resilient leaves. Growing among rugged rocks, its branches spread like giant umbrellas. It seeks not to tower above, but reaches out in all directions. Its fruits may not be showy, yet their fragrance spreads the world. This year, the branches hang heavy once again, ready to offer new fruits.”

The area is filled with high mountains and dense forests, often shrouded in clouds and mist. The scenic area also contains naturally preserved cliffs from ancient earthquakes, as well as rock caves that remain in their original state after seismic activity. These caves connect through the high mountains and narrow valleys. There is also a diverse Torreya Park, along with wonders such as Immortal Cave and Immortal Bridge — a collection of unique mountains, rocks, waters, and forests, making the landscape exceptionally beautiful.

The precious ancient tree clusters, together with the stunning peaks, valleys, and cultural heritage of the Kuaiji Mountain region, form the unique and rich tourism resources of Torreya Township, creating the distinctive charm of the Millennium Torreya Forest of Kuaiji Mountain. The scenic area began construction in 2007, featuring stone-paved mountain hiking trails, bamboo archways, bamboo and stone pavilions, traditional-style covered bridges, leisure farmsteads with torreya forest characteristics, conference centers, and local specialty product sales centers. Currently, the city planning and design institute has completed a comprehensive plan for the Yuehuaping area of the "Millennium Torreya Forest of Kuaiji Mountain." The Torreya Park, Torreya Cultural Museum, Torreya Shrine, resort, and related projects are under steady construction. Meanwhile, the Jidong Town government also plans to integrate neighboring villages that produce torreya, thereby expanding the torreya forest sightseeing area to over 10,000 mu.
