Heavenly Work Buddha
The Heavenly Work Buddha in Keqiao District, Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, located within the Keqian Scenic Area, was carved during the Sui Dynasty and completed in the early Tang Dynasty. It took three generations of stonemasons to complete and stands 20.8 meters tall, with ear canals large enough for a person to walk through. It is one of the Four Great Stone Buddhas of Zhejiang. The Buddha features a broad face and forehead, a serene and benevolent expression, a full and round visage, and a tranquil, dignified demeanor, making it a treasured piece of ancient stone carving art in the Jiangnan region. Unlike many semi-relief or relief stone Buddhas in China, this statue is a fully round sculpture, with its back unattached to the niche, giving it exceptional cultural value. The worship platform in front of the Buddha is 23 meters long, 21 meters wide, and 1.2 meters high, engraved with Buddhist symbols and the “Six Character Mantra.” Forty-eight Buddha statues are carved on the outer railings surrounding the area.
