Fuhong Bridge is located at the western entrance of Hougang and is an exquisitely designed stone beam bridge. The middle stone slab of the bridge features symmetrical carved patterns, with the three characters “福洪桥” (Fuhong Bridge) engraved in the center. However, locals simply call it Hong Bridge, having forgotten its original name. The bridge was rebuilt by local residents during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, and was restored in the 49th year of the Qianlong reign (1784). It is 16.4 meters long, 2.1 meters wide, and has a span of 4.7 meters. Legend has it that during the Taiping Rebellion, the peasant uprising army fought against the Qing government but ultimately failed due to various reasons. At that time, a group of Taiping soldiers wandered to Anchang from elsewhere. The local landlords and gentry, terrified, colluded with the Qing government to suppress them. They spread rumors portraying the Taiping soldiers as monstrous “long-haired rebels,” and sought opportunities to eliminate them. One day, the wealthy landlord Huang Tongling gathered armed local forces and brutally massacred hundreds of Taiping soldiers on Fuhong Bridge. The blood of the Taiping soldiers stained the stone steps of the bridge and turned the clear waters of Hougang River red.
